Stay on Track this Thanksgiving 🦃

Turkey Day is on the way! If you’ve seen progress in the gym this year, or you’re just getting started on your fitness journey and want to maintain momentum, Thanksgiving can seem like a looming obstacle on your path to success.

When it comes to the CrossFit nutrition prescription (eat meats and vegetables, nuts and seeds, some fruit, little starch and no sugar. Keep intake to levels that will support exercise, but not body fat), Thanksgiving can work! The star of the show is turkey, and there are plenty of veggie sides to choose from.

Enjoy the day without derailing your health and fitness goals. Here are 4 simple strategies you can use while celebrating with family and friends to keep you on track.

1. Pregame Warm Up

Maintain as much of your routine as you can before Thanksgiving dinner. Workout like you normally would (we host a workout at CrossFit 781 Thanksgiving morning at 8:30 AM!). Exercise before a big meal has lots of benefits like improving metabolism, as well as regulating blood sugar and appetite.

Don’t arrive for the feast on an empty stomach. Enjoy your typical protein-rich breakfast and snacks. Protein helps curb excessive hunger and prevents overeating.

2. Protein and Veggies for the Win

When filling your plate, make protein and veggies the main attractions. Turkey (a protein powerhouse) and a colorful array of vegetables, offer essential nutrients and fiber, contributing to a feeling of fullness.

3. Hydrate

Keep up your daily water intake throughout the day. Hydration not only supports digestion but can also help control your appetite during the feast.

4. Trick Plays: Alcohol and Dessert

While toasting to gratitude, keep alcohol intake in check. Excessive drinking adds empty calories, may lead to poor food choices, interferes with your body’s ability to burn fat, and will negatively affect your sleep.

Indulging in dessert is a Thanksgiving tradition. Moderation is key though. Choose your favorite, enjoy, and resist the urge to overdo it.

Thanksgiving is one day, and just one meal. Make mindful choices, balance indulgence with smart strategies, and enjoy the feast with family and friends while staying on track towards your goals.

Cheers to a happy and healthy Thanksgiving!
