Stretch vs. Strength

Nagging aches, pains, and injuries can be frustrating. Avoiding these bumps in the road is key to maintaining a consistent routine, staying active, and an overall happy, healthy lifestyle. Conventional wisdom says that stretching will help keep you injury-free. However, studies show there is a far more powerful tool to keep you durable and resilient: strength training.

A 2014 systematic review and meta-analysis by Lauersen, Bertelsen, and Andersen, published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine, had eye-opening results when it comes to what actually works to reduce injury risk and keep you going strong. In their comprehensive review of 25 high-quality studies involving over 26,000 participants, Lauersen et al. found that strength training was the most effective method for preventing injuries, reducing injury rates by an impressive 69%. That’s not a small difference—it’s a game-changer.

This means if you incorporate regular resistance training into your routine you are far less likely to suffer from overuse injuries, sprains, or strains. Strength training doesn’t just build muscle, it also reinforces tendons, ligaments, bones, and joints, while improving coordination and balance. All of this adds up to a body that’s more resilient to the stresses of everyday life.

The same study showed that while stretching is often assumed to be a key part of injury prevention, its effectiveness was surprisingly limited. Lauersen et al. reported only a 4% reduction in injury riskfrom stretching alone.

Stretching isn’t bad or useless, it plays a clear role in improving your flexibility and mobility. Though, if one of your goals is to avoid injury and improve durability, stretching isn’t the best strategy on its own. Think of it more as a supporting actor, not the star of the show.

To protect yourself from nagging aches, pains, and injuries to keep doing what you love—whether that’s running, playing sports, or chasing your kids around the yard—strength training needs to be part of your routine. You don’t need to become a gym rat to see the benefits. A couple of sessions a week of well-structured resistance training can dramatically reduce your risk of injury and make you feel stronger and more capable in everyday life.
